Assessment of Optimal Locations for Green Hydrogen Production along the Iranian Coasts Utilizing Hybrid Renewable Energy Sources

Abstract
Considering the increasing role of renewable energies in the transition towards a low-carbon economy and the strategic importance of Iran's southern coasts for the development of marine-based energy, this research identifies and assesses the most suitable regions for harnessing renewable energies, particularly for green hydrogen production. To this end, climatic and oceanographic data were extracted from reputable global databases such as ERA5, Global Wind Atlas, and Global Solar Atlas and analyzed for five selected sites: Khor-e Doragh, Khuran Strait, Jask, Chabahar, and Asaluyeh. Key parameters including solar irradiance, wind speed and power density, wave characteristics, and tidal range were evaluated. The analysis results indicate that the Chabahar region possesses unique potential for the development of renewable energy projects due to the simultaneous availability of solar and wave energy resources. Furthermore, Khor-e Doragh, owing to its high tidal range, and Jask, due to favorable wind energy conditions, represent other viable options for renewable energy harnessing. From an economic perspective, the combination of solar and wave energy in Chabahar is considered the most favorable option for developing green hydrogen projects, potentially due to lower costs compared to other resources. Given the region's geopolitical location, access to deep waters, and proximity to international routes, Chabahar has the potential to become Iran's hub for marine-based renewable energy. This study can serve as a basis for policymaking, investment decisions, and the design of hybrid energy systems on Iran's southern coasts to achieve national goals for sustainable development and green hydrogen production.
