Experimental and numerical study of Scour beneath two Pipelines in tandem Due to Tidal Currents

Abstract
In industrial applications, multiple parallel pipelines are utilized to connect offshore platforms to coastal facilities. This configuration ensures uninterrupted operation of the coastal facilities in the event of damage to any individual pipeline. The flow and scour patterns around each pipeline are influenced by the factors such as the number of pipelines and their spacing from one to another. In this study, the impact of tidal currents on scouring beneath two identical pipelines placed in a tandem arrangement investigated using both experimental and numerical models. For this purpose, first, the hydrodynamic and sediment transport models based on Flow-3D are used to numerically simulate the local scour around the two tandem pipelines due to bidirectional tidal currents. Then, two series of experiments are carried out for the steady state and bidirectional flow conditions. The experimental results show that for tandem pipelines scour in clear water condition, the maximum scour depths under steady state flow condition exceeds than that caused by bidirectional flow. Further, the scour holes are highly dependent on the bidirectional flow velocity and tidal period as well as the gap between two pipes. When the gap between pipes is equal to one pipe diameter, the scouring depth is lower compared to closely conducted pipes. For this case, each pipe has a unique scour hole with limited dimensions. Finally, the numerical results have been compared with the corresponding experimental data and a relatively good agreement was achieved between them.
